Top 10 Things To Remember in Moving With Your Pet

Moving is not easy for most humans since it can give a lot of stress and anxiety. The same goes for most pets, so it is important you know some basic things when moving with your pet. Here are things you should keep in mind.

1. When moving with your pet make sure that you have updated the information on your pet’s tag. Information such as destination address, telephone and mobile numbers, should be updated and identified on a tag and study collar. Another way for identification is a microchip injected under the skin of the pet.

2. Before you move out also make sure that you have notified your veterinarian. You should also ask for the updated copy of the vaccination history of your pet. Keep the medical history of your pet along with other important documents you have. Keep the mobile number of your veterinarian so you can seek his or help in case something happens to your pet.

3. As much as possible you have to keep a week’s worth of medication and food. Because veterinarian cannot give prescription to your pet unless they have seen your pet, you should bring your pet to your veterinarian first before seeking any list of prescription drugs. You would also need special therapeutic foods in excess which will be handy in case you don’t find the food immediately in your new place.

4. Get your pet a travel crate that would provide them with a safe, quiet and more importantly a well ventilated place. The travel crate must be collapsible and lightweight. Having a strong crate should also keep the pet from escaping.

5. Have a first aid kit with you as you travel. Basic first aid kit includes a gauze to wrap wounds, adhesive tape for bandages, and 3 percent hydrogen peroxide. You might also make use of a blanket, door, board, and even a floor mat as your emergency stretcher.

6. You might also need to have a restraining strap for your pet. Transport pet in a carrier that is well ventilated. Keep the crate secure by putting in a seat belt, then give your pet with enough toys to keep it busy.

7. If you are flying, make arrangements with your airline company on the transport of your pet. Some companies allow pets to be kept in the cabin although you have to buy a special crate that would fit in under the seats.

8. Remember to ask your veterinarian for recommendations on a veterinary clinic, a new veterinarian as well as an animal hospital at the new area you would be moving in.

9. Make sure that you are able to prepare your new home to be as pet-friendly as possible, as pets could be confused and frightened when places in a new environment.

10. Be informed about the new area you would be living in. Check if there are local disease concerns like Lyme disease or heart worm, along with any medications or vaccinations that your pet could require.
