The State of Hawaii is a group of islands in the Pacific Ocean situated 2000 miles (3200 km) south west of the mainland United States. The island chain, or archipelago, was formed by a series of volcanoes erupting from the sea floor.
The state actually consists of hundreds of islands, spanning an area of 1500 miles although it is the largest 8 islands which are most commonly referred to. These are called: Niihau, Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Lanai, Kahoolawe, Maui and Hawaii. The latter is the largest island and to avoid confusion it is often known as the âBig Islandâ.
The capital and largest city is Honolulu, situated on the island of Oahu. In Hawaiian, Honolulu means âsheltered bayâ. Honolulu is the annual host of the NFLâs Pro Bowl held in February.
There are two National Parks here: Haleakala located on Maui, which was designated an International Biosphere Reserve in 1980, and the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park which has also been designated an International Biosphere Reserve as well as a World Heritage Site.
Hawaiiâs economy is based primarily on tourism as the islands have a year-round appeal with the warm climate; over 7 million tourists visit per year.
Moving to the great Islands of Hawaii can be the chance of a lifetime. Living on the islands is radically different than living anywhere else in the world. You will find that the old traditions of the natives still hold true in many cases, and you should be prepared to see and participate in things that you may not have before. So get yourself hyped up and ready to go!
