Idaho is in the Pacific Northwest region of the US and has borders with Utah and Nevada in the south, Oregon and Washington in the west, Wyoming and Montana in the east and Canada in the north.
Idaho is a Rocky Mountain state and the majority of it is mountainous, rugged country which supports landscape like Hells Canyon – the deepest canyon in the US, located within the Hells Canyon National Recreation Area in the west of the state.
The capital and largest city is Boise in the south west. This is within the Snake River Plain at the foot of the Salmon River Mountains. Boise comes from the French word ‘boisee’ which means wooded. It is this fact which gave Boise its nickname “The City of Trees”.
The state has two time zones – in the south, including Boise, is Mountain Time, whilst north of Salmon River is in the Pacific Time Zone.
