Louisiana has the distinction of being the only state in the United States to be divided into Parishes. A parish is akin to the counties that we see all other states divided into.
Louisiana is famous for its unique culture. The culture, along with languages that are spoken in the state, are numerous. This state gets its name from the King of France. King Louis XIV was the ruler of France when Rene Robert Cavelier claimed the land where louisiana now exists. Its original name was La Louisiane, which meant the 'Land of Louis'.
Louisiana suffers from more thunderstorms than any other state in the union except Florida. The summertime is the worst time of the year for thunderstorms in this area. The state averages over sixty thunderstorms per year.
This state was created by the silt deposits that were carried downstream by the Mississippi River. This has occurred over thousands of years and has resulted in more than just one state.
