Michigan is a Midwestern state made up of two peninsulas jutting into the Great Lakes. It has borders with Indiana and Ohio to the south; Lake Erie, Ontario and Huron Lake to the east, Lake Superior to the north and Lake Michigan, Wisconsin and Illionois to the west.
Michigan’s two peninsulas, called the Upper and Lower Peninsula, are actually separated by water. The Straits of Mackinac is 5 miles (8km) wide and is traversed by the Mackinac Bridge – the 3rd longest suspension bridge between anchorages in the world.
The capital city is Lansing, located on the Lower Peninsula. Detroit had initially been the capital but due to concerns for the state capital being captured, it was decided that this be moved. On April 31, 1848, Lansing officially became the new state capital regardless of the fact that this tiny settlement only had a population of 20 at the time!
The largest city is Detroit, located at the eastern edge of the state, facing Ontario, Canada across a narrow strait. Detroit is known for being the center of the automobile industry.
Michigan’s Upper Peninsula is quite mountainous in the west with the Huron Mountains and the Porcupine Mountains. The highest point in the state is in the former; Mount Arvon stands 1,979 feet (603m). This Peninsula has been heavily forested, though despite this, forestland still covers over half of the state.
Michigan has one National Park, which is Isle Royale National Park. This is the largest island on Lake Superior, at over 45 miles (72km) long, though as a National Park is relatively small. The Park includes the island and surrounding smaller islands and was established in 1940. Later it was designated a Wilderness Area and later still, an International Biosphere Reserve.
Michigan is a diverse place to live.Between the major metropolitan areas and the beauty of the native wilderness, this state provides a vast array of things to do. No matter what your interests are, there is surely something in Michigan to interest you.
