North Dakota is a Midwestern state which borders with the Canadian provinces of Manitoba and Saskatchewan in the north, Montana to the west, South Dakota to the south and Minnesota to the east.
In the west of the state, the Missouri River flows through North Dakota. The large Lake Sakakawea has been formed on the river after the construction of the Garrison Dam and this half of the state consist of the hilly Great Plains and the northern end of the Badlands. Whilst the central region of the state is on the Missouri Plateau, the eastern is a flat lowland in the valley of the Red River.
North Dakota’s only National Park, Theodore Roosevelt National Park is in the Badlands region. The Park is quite unique in that it actually consists of 3 geographically separated areas: the North Unit, the South Unit and the Elkhorn Ranch.
The capital city is Bismarck. Originally called Edwinton, the name was changed to Bismarck in 1873 to honor the German chancellor Otto von Bismarck in an attempt to attract German immigrants here.
Agriculture has long been the chief economy of the state despite the fact that only 10% of the population is employed in the industry. Petroleum and food processing are also important sectors.
