Oklahoma is located in the South Central United States and is part of the Bible Belt. Its neighbors are Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri and Arkansas.
Oklahoma City is the state capital and largest city. Formerly Guthrie was the territorial capital, but OKC (as it’s nicknamed) grew so rapidly and overtook Guthrie’s population that they decided, when the state was admitted to the Union in 1907, to have the capital here.
The state has four main mountain ranges: the Ouachita Mountains in the south east, the Arbuckle Mountains in the north, the Wichita Mountains in the south west and the Ozark Mountains in the north east. In the south east corner is what’s regarded as the world’s tallest hill, Cavanal Hill, which at 1,999 feet (609m) it is just one foot off being regarded as a mountain!
The state contains 11 different ecological regions and is home to a great diversity of animals, flora and fauna. From forests, which cover 24% of the state, to prairie grasslands with American Bison roaming. There are 6 protected regions and 50 state parks as well as many wildlife reserves and conservation areas.
Oklahoma has one of the fastest growing economies in the country and was rated as one of the most business-friendly states. There are 6 Fortune 500 companies headquartered here and one Fortune 1000. Natural gas is one of the main sectors and the state is the second highest producer of this and the 5th largest producer of crude oil.
