Alabama is often called the ‘Heart of Dixie’ due to its location in the country. The southeast was often known as Dixie, or the Deep South.
Although Alabama’s capital is Montgomery, the largest city is actually Birmingham, located north of Montgomery. Birmingham was founded after the Civil War, in 1871, and was named after Birmingham in England. The city rapidly grew in industrial importance and population, earning the nickname ‘The Pittsburgh of the South’.
Just over half of Alabama is relatively flat with plains descending towards the Gulf of Mexico, but the state’s northern part is mountainous, rising to the Appalachian Mountains and Alabama’s highest peak, Mount Cheaha, at nearly 2,405 ft (733 m).
Alabama has a number of National Parks and Historic Sites. Of geographic interest is the Wetumpka Crater, just north of Montgomery, where a 1,000 foot wide meteorite hit about 80 million years ago. There is also the longest natural rock bridge east of the Rockies, located just south of Haleyville.
After the Civil War, Alabama’s economy suffered but in recent decades the state has turned this around and is important for a number of industries now – agriculture, iron and steel products, aerospace and electronic products and since 1993, automotive manufacturing. Alabama is now second only to Detroit in terms of automobile output and is set to overtake Detroit by 2009.
Alabama’s Constitution was written into law in 1901 and is the world’s longest! It has over 770 amendments and 310,000 words making it forty times longer than the U.S. Constitution.
