The official name of the state is the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, and it is located in the New England region of the US. The state has a border with Massachusetts and Connecticut and an Atlantic Ocean coast.
The eastern part of the state contains Narragansett Bay which holds around 30 islands. The whole of the state is relatively flat, rising to just 812 feet (247m) at its highest point, Jerimoth Hill.
The state was at the center of the birth of the Industrial Revolution and was the leader in textiles after a cotton mill was established here. Textiles are still a part of the economy today but are far less important. The most important industry is now healthcare, followed by tourism and manufacturing.
Rhode Island was ‘the first’ for many things: the first Baptist Church in America was founded in Providence in 1638. In 1763 the first Synagogue was founded in Newport. The first 9 hole golf course was completed in Newport in 1890.
