Wyoming is in the Western United States and has a border with Montana, South Dakota, Nebraska, Colorado, Utah and Idaho.
Wyoming is a very mountainous state, and is at the point where the Great Plains meet the Rocky Mountains. The whole state sits on top of a plateau so is at a high elevation –the highest point is Gannett Peak in the Wind River Range, standing at 13,804 feet (4,210m), whilst the lowest point is 3,099 feet (945m) at the Belle Fourche River in the north east.
Over 48% of the land here is owned by the US Government. There are two National Parks here: Yellowstone was the first ever National Park in the US, established on March 1, 1872 and is one of the country’s most famous. It features geothermal geysers, such as the world famous Old Faithful Geyser. The second national Park is Grand Teton in the west of the state and is named after the tallest mountain in the Teton Range.
Wyoming is also home to numerous other Recreation Areas, National Historic Trails and Sites and National Monuments, such as Devils Tower. Not surprisingly, tourism is very important for the state; Yellowstone alone attracts over 2.8 million visitors per year – that’s 2.3 million more people than live here!
The main sources of economy in Wyoming are the tourism industry and mining. Agriculture has been historically important and whilst this importance has decreased, agriculture is a part of the state’s culture and lifestyle. If you combine all of the state’s national parks and monuments, they are visited by well over 6 million people per year and these people all bring much revenue to the state.
