Are you thinking about moving to New York? If you are, then there are many amazing things that you are about to take in. New York is a magical place that cannot be described with words alone. Only your first trip to this all encompassing state will give you a true picture of what New York is. From the epicenter of theater and the arts, to a thriving nightlife that gives the 'City That Never Sleeps' its nickname, this city, and the state that encompasses it, will be unlike anything you've ever experienced before.

About Your New Home

The first thing that comes to mind when you envision New York is inevitably New York City. The tall skyscrapers lining the horizon and the hustle of the daily streets are pictures that form in our minds when we think about this area of the United States. If this is the only thing that is drawing you to this wonderful place, then you are really missing out. Most people simply don't realize how much of New York is not busy and full of people. In fact, the northern, or upstate part of the state is thriving with dairy farms, wineries, and federally protected state parks. These things are what makes up the largest part of the state of New York.

New York City may be the most popular area of the state, but it only covers about one percent of the land area. But when you put the rural countryside and the thriving city together, you can be assured that you will be going to a place that can honestly and truly offer you the best of both worlds. No matter what you are craving this weekend, or during the week, the state of New York has something to satiate even the most picky members of your family.

Moving to the City

Considering the idea of long distance moving to another state, New York might just be the best solution for a number of reasons. Not only will you have access to so much to do, but you'll be able to find a job in one of the many industries that thrives here. However, interstate moving is no joke. It requires a lot of planning and organization before you ever pack your first box. Thankfully, there are plenty of movers in New York that offer free quotes and tons of experience, all available to make your move stress free.

Because this is one of the most populated cities in the entire country, it is vital that you plan a move to this area. If you are considering living in the city, then you need to take a few specific differences between this area, and other more rural areas, into account. Be sure that you think about and discuss the following with any movers that you get quotes from:

  • Make sure that you know the place where you are moving. Consider visiting before you make a long distance move.
  • Check to see if there are any stairs or elevators, and let your New York moving company know well in advance. Be sure the extra fees for moving over these obstacles are included in your binding moving quote.
  • Verify move in or move out times with the building manager or landlord. Within this big city, such times are often limited, as is access to freight elevators.
  • Plan your move for a time of day when the traffic will permit a moving truck to sit on the side of the road without interrupting the flow. Check with the local borough officials (New York City is separated into five separate boroughs) to see if you or your movers need any special permits to park the moving truck, or if there are any special laws that you will have to abide by while moving.
  • Parking is limited, so consider the distance your movers will have to carry your things to get them into your apartment building. Often times, movers cannot park their truck right outside the building and will charge you extra for the long walk they will have to make.
  • Check ahead of time to ensure that any pets you are moving are legal and up to date on all required shots. Your landlord should include them on the lease, but will often refuse larger dogs and exotic pets. Consider also how well your pet will adjust to a smaller home and less room to run around in.

Moving to Rural New York

Moving to a rural area in the state of New York is a bit easier than moving to someplace in the city. Not only is there more room for you to maneuver,  but you will find it easier to find a date and time that the movers can access your new home. Still, make sure that you remember the following before you start packing for your interstate move.

  • Once again, verify that there is parking for the moving truck. If the road is quite far from your home, you may find yourself paying extra fees for the distance that the movers have to carry your things. Declare this ahead of time so that it can be included on the binding moving quotes that you get from companies you will potentially hire.
  • Even though there is more room, it's still important to check with local ordinances to ensure your pets are both allowed in the area, and that they have all of their required shots and vaccinations.
  • If you're moving to a larger home, you might have to pay a fee for steps that might be involved.
  • All New York moving companies, regardless of whether they are moving you into the main city or to a rural area, should be licensed by the Commissioner of Transportation of New York. You can contact the agency directly at 800.786.5368 to verify a license number.

Learn the Laws

Remember to familiarize yourself with the laws and regulations of this area, as they may differ from those in the area where you currently reside. Usually it is easiest to move into New York if you use a company that is familiar with the area and the laws. If you are moving from another state, however, you will have to choose an interstate moving company who is used to dealing with New York rules and regulations. Unlike other areas of the country, this huge city will often have laws that you aren't familiar with. Parking signs and the laws associated with them are one of the biggest headaches that movers face. Scope out parking places before moving day to avoid trouble, because if you do not follow what the signs indicate, you will get a ticket. Regardless of how prepared you might be, talk to the movers to find out who would be responsible if you have the unfortunate luck to get a ticket despite all of your planning.

Get Rid of Things You Don't Need

If you are taking the big leap and moving to New York from another area in the country, it may be wise to weed out anything that you really don't need to take with you. This will save you time and money, as you will not have to worry about moving it. You might also make some money if you choose to sell these things at a yard sale. The thing about New York City, and the housing available there, is that it is often small. The less that you take, the more likely it is that everything will fit into your new home. If you take everything from your large home and try to move it to this city, you will likely find yourself paying to move everything and then having to get rid of half of it anyways. Save yourself money and time by weeding out ahead of time.

After your Move

No matter why you moved, and no matter where you moved from, you are sure to be shocked by the sheer number of things to do. It is said that you can eat at a different restaurant every night for well over five years in Manhattan alone. This amounts to a very large number of restaurants. Even living in this area will never permit you to visit every establishment or place of business. For many people, culture shock will be a real thing, as many New Yorkers are firm and can often seem rude. It will take some time for you and your family to get used to the way people are in this area, but no matter what, you should always get out and learn as you go. Be firm and say what you need to say in as few words as possible. Don't forget to learn the lingo as well, and you'll soon fit right in.

Having just gotten married, we were short on money, but we also needed to condense our homes. We took a chance and filled out the form on this site. I am glad we did because we were able to hire the best moving company I have ever worked with.

Great moving companies with high ratings from the BBB is what I got when I filled out the Moving Companies quote form. I even asked three of them to come to my home for a more detailed quote, and they did.
